WEB PAGE NOTE: What follows is the 1996 introduction to The Cancer Industry. This book came out of my experiences at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. It was first written between 1977 and 1980, and published as The Cancer Syndrome by Grove Press (N.Y.) in 1980. Reviewer comments can be found elsewhere at this site. The book went through many hard cover, trade paperback and mass market paperback editions.
Because of changes of ownership at Grove, the book was allowed to go out of print. Then in 1989 it was republished as The Cancer Industry by Paragon House (N.Y.) I used that occasion to make extensive revisions and additions, including the Burzynski chapter, now the longest chapter in the book.
In 1993, the rights to the book were purchased by Equinox Press (Brooklyn, N.Y.) After the existing stock was depleted, I undertook this revision. Although many chapters were brought up to date, the main change has been the addition of this new 32-page introduction. I also used the occasion to tell the story of the struggle over the Office of Technology Assessment report on Unconventional Cancer Treatments and over the founding of the Office of Alternative Medicine (N.I.H.).
Because of the length of this chapter, we have broken it up into several smaller files.
