OCAM (Formerly OAM)

At this page you will find articles relating to the Office of Alternative Medicine (OAM)--soon to be the Office of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (OCAM)--at the National Institutes of Health. Since November 1991, when OAM was created through the efforts of Sen. Tom Harkin, this has been a rollercoaster ride of raised and plunging expectations. I am a founding member of the Alternative Medicine Program Advisory Council of the NIH, appointed by HHS Sec. Donna Shalala. As my three-year tenure draws to an end, I remained "guardedly optimistic" about the future, although I continue to be perturbed by the slowness with which things get done in Bethesda. --Ralph W. Moss, Ph.D.
